This member of the Moraceae family was described by Daniel Oliver in 1886. It is found in Kenya, Tanzania, East Africa, growing in a rich or a well drained rich gravel with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow up to 15 centimetres, the stem up to 50 or even 75 centimetres. The flowers are green and triangular. The genera is named after Theodor Dorsten, 16th century German botanist and medical professor at Marburg. The species name after the old town of Zanzibar.
