This member of the Moraceae family was described by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1894. It is found in Kenya, Uganda, Zaire, Burundi, Rwanda, Mozambique and Tanzania, growing in a well-drained soil, with quite some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the stems reach for 70 centimetres. The flowers are green and brown, and it can be reproduced by cuttings as well. The genera is named after Theodor Dorsten, 16th century German botanist and medical professor at Marburg. The species name after Johann Maria Hildebrandt, 19th century German plant collector. An other variation: D. h. schleterii.
