This member of the Moraceae family was described by Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter in 1844 and published correctly in 1851. It is found in central Africa and Madagascar. It grows in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow from four to seven centimetres, the stem to 40 centimetres. The flowers are greenish. The genera is named after Theodor Dorsten, 16th century German botanist and medical professor at Marburg. The species name means 'sharp-pointed', like the flowers.
