This member of the Cactaceae family was given this name by Nathaniel Lord Britton & Joseph Nelson Rose in 1923. It is found from Metztitlan and Hidalgo, Mexico up to Texas. It grows in a well drained soil with some water and not much sun. Old plants form a caudex, which can grow to six centimetres in diameter, the whole plant to twelve centimetres. The flowers are yellow and the plant can be reproduced both by seeds and cuttings.

The name is derived from the Greek dolikos for 'long', and thele for 'nipple' or 'breast'. The species name means 'long mum' or 'long breast'.
