DIOSCOREA RUPICOLA

This member of the Dioscoreaceae family was given this name by Carl Sigismund Kunth in 1950. It is found in South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania, growing in a rich and well drained soil with some water and some sun, but only in winter. The caudex can grow to 80 centimetres in diameter and is said to reach three meters in height. The vines reaches eight metres. The flowers are brownish green. Dioscorea is named after Pedianos Dioscorides, a Greek physician if the 1st century A.D. The species name means 'grow in rocks'. This is a winter grower. A wild plant by Alison Young, Inaturalist.org.
