This member of the Dioscoreaceae family was given this name by Achille Richard in 1851. It is found in tropical Africa and Madagascar. It is growing in a rich soil with quite some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to three centimetres in diameter, ten in length, the entire plant to six metres in height. The flowers are green. Dioscorea is named after Pedianos Dioscorides, a Greek physician if the 1st century A.D. The species name quartiniana after Richard Quartin-Dillon, a French botanist.
