This member of the Cucurbitaceae family was given this name by Rogers McVaugh in 2001. It is found from Texas down into Mexico. It grows in a well drained soil with quite some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to five centimetres in diameter, the vines will reach for four to twelve meters. The flowers are yellow, and the plant can be reproduced both by seeds and cuttings. The genera is named after Jennie van Ackeren, a US-American botanist, specialised in Cucurbitaceae.

The species name means 'big'.
