CYPHOSTEMMA HARDYI

This member of the Vitaceae family was given this name by Elisabeth Retief in 1981. It is found in Waterberg Mountain Bushveld in north-eastern South Africa, growing in grit or another well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to fifteen centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 50 centimetres in height. The flowers are pale greenish yellow, and the grapes red. It was first collected by Dr R. A. Dyer and Dr Inez Verdoorn during January 1942. Many years later by Mr David S. Hardy, horticulturist and former curator at the Botanical Garden Pretoria, RSA.

The genera name from the Greek kyphos; 'tumor' or,'hump' and stemma; 'garland' or 'crown'. The species name after Mr David S. Hardy, horticulturist and former curator at the Botanical Garden Pretoria.
