This member of the Primulaceae family was given this name by Louis Henry Correvon in 1897. It is found in north-western Georgia, growing in a rich soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to seven centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 20 centimetres in height. The flowers are from lavender over pink to purple.
The genera name from Greek kyklos: 'circle' referring to the rounded tubers. The species name from Greek; kolchikon; 'poison root'.
