This member of the Primulaceae family was given this name by Heinrich Moritz Willkomm in 1875. It is found in southern France, on the Balearic Islands: Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Cabrera Dragonera and on Corsica, growing in a well drained soil with some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to five centimetres in height. The flowers are white.

The genera name from Greek kyklos: 'circle' referring to the rounded tubers. The species name after the island of Balearic.
