This member of the Burseraceae family was given this name by Johannes Jacobus Adriaan van der Walt in 1971. It is found on both sides of Orange River, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 12 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from 50 to 300 centimetres in height. The small flowers are yellow.

The genera name from Greek kommi; 'gum' and Greek - phoros; 'carrying' for the balsam-like scented resin. The species name from Latin cervi and folia; meaning "stag horn leaved".
