COLCHICUM AUTUMNALE

This member of the Colchicaceae family was given this name by John Charles Manning and Annika Vinnersten in 2007. It is found grass land of the Western Cape in South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The bulbs will grow to three centimetres, the stemless plant up to fifteen centimetres in height. The flowers are white and will be seen in the spring.

The name of the genus derives from Κολχίς (Colchis), the Ancient Greek name for the region of კოლხეთი (Kolkhida) in modern Georgia (Caucasus). The species name indicates it origin from the cape.
