This member of the Bixaceae* family was given this name by James W. Byng and Maarten Joost Maria Christenhusz in 2018. It is found in Columbia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and southern United States, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 40 centimetres in height. The flowers are yellow or salmon-orange to salmon-maroon, with deep maroon basal spots.

The genera name from Latin; cochlea; 'snail' and spermum; ' pollen'. The species name from Latin; palmatum; 'lobed' and -fidum; ' like' or 'trusty' for the leaves.
