This member of the Fabaceae family was given this name by Christoph Jakob Trew in 1763. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay and Uruguay. It have been introduced in Dominican Republic, India, Java, Puerto Rico, Queensland, Sri Lanka and more. It is growing in a well drained but rich soil with quite some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to seven metres in height. The flowers are lavender and white.
