This member of the Montiaceae family was given this name by Roger Charles Carolin after Mark A. Herschkovitz describtion in 1990. It is found on the Isla Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico. It needs a very well drained soil, little water and lots of sun. The flowers are pale to bright pink, and the plant can be reproduced both by seeds and cuttings.
The genera name after Jean Louis Calandrini, 1703-1758, a professor of mathematics and philosophy, and a botanical author in Switzerland. The species name as it was first found on the island of Guadalupe.
