This member of the Vitaceae family was given this name by Jules Émile Planchon in 1887. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay, growing in a rather rich but drained soil with quite some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 15 metres in height. The small flowers are red with a yellow centre. The generic name is derived from the Greek word κισσος kissos, meaning 'ivy'. The species is name after John Tweedie,1775-1862.
