This member of the Vitaceae family was given this name by Jules Émile Planchon in 1887. It is found in south-eastern Kenya down into northern Tanzania, growing in a well drained soil with some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to 14 centimetres in diameter, the vines up to ten metres in height. The flowers are greenish white. The generic name is derived from the Greek word κισσος kissos, meaning 'ivy'.
The species name after Charles Victor Aubert Duparquet, 1830-1888, a French missionary and botanist, who worked in Africa.
