This member of the Asclepiadaceae* family was given this name by Peter Vincent Bruyns in 1988. It is found in the Dhofar Province in Oman and Al-Mahra in Yemen, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow from fifteen to 30 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from 100 to 150 centimetres in height. The flowers are green with purplish brown minute spots.

The genera name from Latin; cibus; 'nourishment' or 'food' and Greek; rhiza; 'root' as the roots can be eaten.

The species name after the area it first was found in; Dhofar. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016 is Asclepiadaceae now part of the Apocynaceae.
