This member of the Asphodelaceae was given this name by Alwin Berger in 1908. It is found in South Africa, southern Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe, growing in grit with some water and lots of sun. The base can grow up to ten centimetres or more in diameter. The plant up to 40 centimetres in height. It has yellowish white or pink flowers.
The genera name from Greek: chortos; 'feeding place' and Greek leiron; 'lily' for the preferred habitat in grassland. The species name as it was first found in Angola. Dormant plant.
