This member of the Zamiaceae family was given this name by Fernando Medellín-Leal in 1963. The remaining 50 wild plants are found in San Luis Potosí; north-eastern Mexico, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 20 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 50 centimetres in height. The cones start out green and end up brown.
The genus name from the Greek ceras, meaning 'horn', which refers to the paired, spreading horny projections on the male and female sporophylls, and azaino; ' pinecone ' of all species. The species is named after Ignacio Zaragoza, 1829-1862, a Mexican general and politician. Habitat photo by J. Arturo de Nova; Inaturalist.org.
