This member of the Ericaceae family was given this name by George Bentham in 1844. It is found in the highlands of southern Ecuador, growing in a well drained soil with quite some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to 25 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to two metres in height. The flowers are red.

The genera name is named for the "horns" on the stem some species have. The species name as the flowers reminds of those of Loranthus. The flowers by G. P. Lewis, Nybg.org.
