This member of the Ericaceae family was given this name by James Leonard Luteyn in 1996. It is found in the mountains of Ecuador, growing as an epiphyte with quite some water and some sun. The caudex might grow to twelve centimetres in diameter, the entire plant might reach 100 centimetres in height. The flowers are crimson.
The genera name is named for the "horns" on the stem some species have. The species name for the tubular nectar glands in the flowers.
