This member of the Malvaceae family was given this name by Pedro Felix Ravenna in 1998. It is found in northern and north-eastern Brazil, growing in a well drained but rich soil with lots of water and little to some sun. The stem can grow to 60 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant twelve to 26 metres in height. The flowers are pale yellow. The genera name is from the local languish; Taíno: ceyba for kapok. The species name means 'swelled or inflated', and must be for the stem.
