This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by William Townsend Aiton in 1811. It is found in Southern South Africa, growing in grit or other well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow up to 25 centimetres in diameter, the leaves only get ten centimetres long. The pink flowers appears before the leaves.
The name Brunsvigia, in honour of the Duke of Brunswick. The species name referring to the teeth-like structures on the leaves.
