This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Christian Frederik Ecklon in 1827. It is fond in East Cape of South Africa, growing in sand or other well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb will grow up to 15 centimetres in diameter, the leaves up to 50 centimetres in length. The large flowers are pinkish-red, and emerges before the leaves.
The name Brunsvigia, in honour of the Duke of Brunswick. The species name means 'eastern'.
