This member of the Araceae family was given this name by Carl Ludwig von Blume in 1836. It is found in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Turkey, growing in a well drained clayish soil with some water and little to some sun. The corm can grow to five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to five or even ten centimetres in height. The flowers are from deep purple to almost black.

The genera name originates from the ancient mane, used by Dioscorides - although is is another genera. The species is named after Nicolas Bové, 1812-1841,a gardener and plant collector active in North Africa and the Middle East, borne in Luxembourg, working in Paris, Egypt and Algeria. This is a winter grower in the wild. The corm by Ori Fragman, Flora.org.i. Flowers by Ori Fragman, Flora.org.i.
