It is found in south-eastern Brazil, growing in mosses or a well drained soil with lots of water and some sun. The rhizomes can grow to ten centimetres or more, the entire plant can reach 25 centimetres in height. The flowers are white, the female sitting closer to the base. The genera name after Michel Bégon, 1638-1710, once a governor of French Haiti. The species name means 'herb-like, with succulent stem'.
