This member of the Apiaceae family was described by Carl Ernst Otto Kuntze in 1891. It is found on the Canary Islands, Mauritania, Morocco, Selvagens and Western Sahara. It grows on the lava rocks and sandy dunes on the coast with some water and lots of sun. The fat roots can grow to seven centimetres in diameter, the whole plant to 70 centimetres height. The flowers are yellow. " Astydamia ": After Astydamia, daughter of Oceanus. The species name latifolia from Latin latus, meaning 'wide leaves'. A large plant by Ori Fragman-Sapir, Powo.science.kew.org. A wild plant with flowers by Jeroen Willemsen, Freenatureimages.eu.
