This member of the Asphodelaceae family was given this name by Carl Linné in 1753. It is found in all the countries around the Mediterranean Sea, growing in a well drained soil with quite some water and lots of sun. The cluster of rhizomes can each grow to two centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 60 centimetres in height, over a meter with the inflorescence. The flowers are white with a brown stripe.

The genera name is from Greek; Aspis; "shield" and glossa; "tongue" for the shape of the corona segments. The species name mean "branched" for the inflorescence.
