This member of the Aizoaceae family was given this name by Martin Heinrich Gustav Schwantes in 1926. It is found in western South Africa, growing in grit or another well drained soil with little to some water and lots of sun. The swollen roots can grow to seven centimetres in diameter, the plant can grow to twelve centimetres height. The flowers are yellow with thin, red stripes.
The genera name means 'looking like Aloe' - although I fail to see that! The species name means 'red-lined flower' - I do get that. This is a winter grower.
