This member of the Passifloraceae family was given this name by Abílio Fernandes and Rosette Mercedes Saraiva Batarda Fernandes in 1958. It is found in south-western Angola, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to ten centimetres in diameter, the annual stems to fifteen centimetres in height.
The name Adenia is derived from aden, meaning gland, and pertains to the glands found on leaves of most of the species.
The species name after Charles Tisserant, 1886–1962, a French clergyman, botanist and plant collector.
