This member of the Passifloraceae family was described by P. Claverie in 1909. It is found on Madagascar, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The fat stem can grow up to 30 centimetres in diameter, two meters long, the vines up to five meters. The flowers are pale yellow.

The name Adenia is derived from aden, meaning gland, and pertains to the glands found on leaves of most of the species.
