This member of the Passifloraceae family was given this name by Willem Jan Jacobus Oswald de Wilde in 1968. It is found in India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and most likely; in-between. It is growing in a well drained but rich soil with quite some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 70 centimetres in diameter, 150 centimetres in height, the entire plant to 25 metres in height. The flowers are greenish white, the orange fruits are poisonous, but the leaves eaten.
The name Adenia is derived from aden, meaning gland, and pertains to the glands found on leaves of most of the species.
The species name from the local vernacular name in Sri Lanka for Adenia. Useful fact: The plant is used as a cure for snake bites.
