This member of the Passifloraceae family was given this name by Hans Schinz in 1892. It is found in Mozambique, Eswatini and South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres or more, the vines can reach four and a half meter. The flowers are greenish white.

The name Adenia is derived from aden, meaning gland, and pertains to the glands found on leaves of most of the species.
