This member of the Passifloraceae family was described by Joseph Burtt Davy in 1926. It is found in north-eastern South Africa and Zimbabwe, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The swollen stem can grow from to 35 to 60 centimetres in diameter and two metres high. The vines can reach six metres. The small flowers are green.
The name Adenia is derived from aden, meaning gland, and pertains to the glands found on leaves of most of the species.
The species name means 'bushy'. A wild A. f. subsp. simplicifolia by B. T. Wursten, Zimbabweflora.co.zw.
