This member of the Passifloraceae family was given this name by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1891. It is found in Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Eswatini, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It preferring a well drained soil, lots of water and sun. The caudex can grow to 60 centimetres, the vines from 20 to 300 centimetres. The flowers are small and white to yellowish.
The name Adenia is derived from aden, meaning gland, and pertains to the glands found on leaves of most of the species.
The species name means 'hand-like'.
